Freewheels and backstops
Freewheels are directional couplings, which means that the driving member rotates the driven member in one direction, while automatically disengaging itseif from the driven member when the direction of rotation is reversed.
The two operating states are:
1. Transmission of torque
2. Idling (overrunning)
Freewheels may be employed as:
Overrunning clutch
Indexing clutch
Backstop
Basic versions
Two basic versions are available. The overrunning speed determines the selection of the appropriate model.
1. Grip-roller freewheels for bw to medium overrunning speeds and for indexing clutches.
2. Sprag freewheels for high overrunning speeds and for backstops.
